Here’s An Insider Peek: New Eats at Great World (Singapore)

Great World mall, formerly known as Great World City has just unveiled its new look after a two-years major revamp. There is still some ongoing work-in-progress at the mall – due to compete by Q2 2020 in preparation for the opening of the Thomson-East Coast Line’s Great World MRT station in 2021.

This is just one phase of the mall’s renovation and for later phase, there will be a new retail link in Basement 2 connecting Great World mall with the new MRT station – Yeah! to shorter travel times, more comfort and greater convenience.

The new Great World offers a new take on the whole shopping experience. Probably first in Singapore’s shopping malls, you can discover dual-level retail pods in the foyer area of the mall.

The new tenant occupying the dual-level pod is a fine-dining dessert concept – named House On The Moon is conceived by multi-Michelin starred chef Juan Amador, Hüseyin Turan and The Science Kitchen.

Expect world-class desserts beautifully plated and presented, tastefully paired with fine selection of tea sourced from a family run tea factory in Sri Lanka. This dessert bar is one pretty unique spot to look out at the new Great World.

Prices start from $25 for a la carte plated desserts and degustation.

If you have yet to visit Great World or haven’t been back in a while, it’s great to know you’re going to have more products (and food) to choose from than ever before.

The newly revamped mall houses more than 50 new tenants, mostly are F&B brands – to name a few; Goobne Chicken Korea (new entry in Singapore), Ryan’s Kitchen (new restaurant-grocery concept), Plentyfull (new outlet deli concept), The Blue Ginger (2nd outlet new menu – read the review here), Salon by The Dark Gallery (4th outlet new concept).

There used to be one supermarket at Great World, but now there is two. CS Fresh by Cold Storage – back with a sleek new look is still located at basement one of the mall; while at basement two, you will find the popular Japanese supermarket Meidi-Ya – smaller than its Liang Court counterpart, but features a wider range of Japan-imported products. You can also find Hokkaido Dosanko Plaza, a Japanese food court (located opposite of Meidi-Ya) selling snacks and food items from Hokkaido.

There is more choices now when it comes to Japanese dining. Japanese F&B brands include : Jugoya Yonehachi (#B1-K117), Okinawan Diner Nirai-Kanai (#01-107), Ginza Anzu (#01-113), issho izakaya (#01-123), Hototogisu Ramen (#01-143), Kuriya Dining (#01-127), Ichiban Boshi (#B1-131), and &JOY Dining Hall (#B1-132) consisting multiple concepts like Kuriya Japanese Market, Ichiban Express, Pittarino, Ramen Kiou, Roman.Tei, and Gokuku Japanese Bakery.

For Asian cuisine – be it Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thai, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Chinese, or Indian, you can find familiar restaurants like Din Tai Fung (#01-138), Tim Ho Wan (#01-139), Crystal Jade Hong Kong Kitchen (#03-127), Imperial Treasure Cantonese Cuisine (#02-111/112), Imperial Treasure Steamboat Restaurant (#01-140), MASA by Black Society (#01-121), Ho Fook Hei Soy Sauce Chicken (#01-141), London Fat Duck (#B1-108), Elemen Classic (#01-122), Bangkok Jam (#02-127), So Pho (#B1-112), Tambuah Mas Indonesian Restaurant (#B1-110), Zaffron Kitchen (Opening Soon #01-153).

Local favourites and cheap eats include Malaysia Chiak! (#B1-102), Food Junction (#03-116), Eng’s Wantan Noodle (#B1-K122), Toastbox (#B1-105), Ya Kun Kaya Toast (#01-135).

There are so many options for coffee lovers now as Great World is home to a multitude of cafes.

Big names like Starbucks and The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf are easy go-to-places for your regular beverages; but for a good coffee fix, homegrown artisanal coffee bar MAVRX Coffee Bar (#01-129) serves a cup above the rest.

Besides the usual long black, latte and cappuccino, MAVRX Coffee Bar offers a refreshing summer coffee – try the Espresso + Tonic ($5.50), served only iced. This could be your new favourite drink!

Other cafe spots to grab a good cup of Joe, while munch on some food for thought include: Plentyfull Bakery & Deli (#B1-K119), TCC – The Connoisseur Concerto (#01-128), Cedele All Day Dining (#B1-K115), Jones The Grocer (#01-163), and PS Cafe (#01-155).

Fans of Bubble tea are not forgotten as well – there are KOI Thé (#01-125) and R&B Tea (#B1-K104); while dessert lovers can indulge in sweet treats at The Dark Gallery (#01-117), and Awfully Chocolate (#01-K103).

Fast food specialities and takeaway food kiosks for confections and like Baker’s Brew (#B1-K103), Kedai Kue-Kue (#B1-K107), Beard Papa (#B1-K126), Famous Amos (#B1-K101), Shake Shake in a Tub (#B1-K113), TORI-Q (#B1-K118), McDonald’s (#01-124), MOS Café (Opening Soon #01-112) are perfect for those time-starved working executives.

Healthy options include SaladStop! (#B1-128), Boost Juice Bars (#B1-K127), Cio Enzyme Drink (#B1-K129) and Coocaça, a pit stop for Smoothie Bowls, Açai Soft Serve, and Superfood Smoothies.

Take a dive into Coocaca‘s ocean-inspired Big Surf Smoothie Bowl ($12.80) – the blue smoothie gets its cool color from blue spirulina, a nutrient-loaded aquabotanical superfood ingredient which makes eating açaí bowls a little more fun.

For those who love grocery shopping at eco-friendly stores, the Great World mall has two big Australian brands – Scoop Wholefoods (#01-148) and The Source Bulk Foods (#B1-142), where you can purchase pantry items like pastas, spices, dried goods and snacks. It’s very difficult to leave the stores without buying anything.

Going gluten-free – whether by choice or not, Ryan’s Grocery is the go-to store for everything wholesome, organic and gluten-free. They have the most comprehensive selection of products that range from organic and free range meats, to seasonal vegetables, gourmet cheese, dry food items, pantry needs and more.
